I Love Humans

Okay, so maybe I borrowed the title of this post from a Facebook Status Update of mine earlier today. Sue me. This week has been a chaotic work week due to a three day onsite meeting. It was nice and all, but I feel as if I will be playing catch up for the next three weeks.

Anyways, I was sitting at my desk Friday attempting to clear my mountainous Inbox when my cell chirped. I didn’t recognize the number, but I decided to answer. The voice on the other end says “Egan” with an inquisitive tone. I confirm it’s me and the woman tells me she’s got something for me.

Before I continue you need some background information. Rewind a month to an incident after work. I hopped in my car after exiting my brick building and drove down the alley between my office and daycare. I saw a oncoming car swerve to avoid striking something on the ground. Not sure what it was, I slowed down to get a closer look. Whoa, someone’s shoulder bag was in the middle of the road. I pulled over, stuck it inside my car, and then went to retrieve Baby Singe from daycare. Once I got home I spent about 20 minutes carefully going through the bag seeking any sort of identification.

Eventually I was able to connect with the owner of the bag on the phone. We agreed to meet the following morning so I could return her shoulder bag. As usual, I was running late that day getting stuck behind a train. The lady met me in front of Starbucks and offered to buy me a beverage for my efforts. I didn’t have time though since I still needed to drop off Baby Singe at daycare. I politely declined and didn’t think I’d ever hear from the woman again.
Dogday

That was until today when my cell phone rang. The lady wanted to meet with me to give me a gift. We met in front of the same Starbucks and she kindly presented a gift. It was a pink bag with a cute stuffed animal dog for Baby Singe. Color me impressed. My daughter loved the dog and we all go home happy. The lady said, “I haven’t stopped thinking about you since that day”. Only if….

    The kindness of strangers rocks!

  2. meno says:

    Only if what?

  3. Amy says:

    That’s sweet.

  4. sprizee says:

Did you find out how she lost her purse? Did she leave it on the top of her car and it just tumbled off? Did someone snatch it from her right before nearly cutting off her arm? Inquiring minds want to know.

  5. Amanda says:

WOW! It isn’t everyday that people are as kind as you to return lost property and it isn’t everyday that the other party is so grateful. Good story.

  6. Felisa says:

Well that was really nice of you! And I’m wondering the same ting sprizee’s wondering… how did she lose her purse?

  7. Cléa says:

People are good, aren’t they? They’re even better when they can’t stop thinking about you…

Jaded – it really is true. I try to live by the mantra “due as you would want others to do” and it makes decisions a bit easier most of the time. If I lost my wallet, I’d just love someone to call me and return it. That’s all.
Meno – ha, I wondered if anyone would ask. Honestly, I couldn’t figure out a way to finish the post so I put that in there.
Amy – I thought so too. I was beaming all day long on Friday. Had she called me a day before, I would’ve had to let the call go to voicemail and missed meeting her. Great timing.
Sprizee – great question, she left it on top of her car. I think she was at the furniture outlet near there and had a brain fart. These things happen with more frequency as you get older.
Amanda – it worked out very well. When trying to find her contact number, I noticed she had done a variety of volunteer work and recently moved to Seattle. There were two credit cards in there with other very important personal numbers. I’m glad I recovered the items.
Felisa – she left it on top of her car. She felt foolish, but thankfully it wasn’t on the street long.
Cléa – completely agree. That comment of hers really did stick with me. I think it’s sweet she was determined to reward me by getting some my daughter would like. Major bonus points for her.

i was going to ask about the “only if” too… didn’t know where you were going with that.
what a nice gesture, on both your parts. some humans are good.

Brookem – I just thought it was the thing to do since I had no way of wrapping up the post with a bow. I hope life is treating you well.

  11. big bro says:

Are you sure there’s no spy-cam in the stuffed animal?

  12. big bro says:

    oh wait…wrong brother.

  13. egan says:

Big bro – nope, no spy-cam in the doggie. If you met the woman, you’d totally understand.
Big bro – wrong brother? Are you losing track of us? I’m the original blogger okay? Thank you very much.

  14. Scarlet Hip says:

    Hey stranger! Awesome story.

  15. tori says:

What a great story. I love when people are good and the people they are good to tell others about it.

  16. Jen says:

Love the story! You are so nice to take the time to do return her purse. I have left things on top of my car a lot! I love when I am leaving soccer and put my water on top of my car and a stranger tells me it is there.

  17. egan says:

Scarlet Hip – great to hear from you. You’re not blogging anymore are you? So nice to see you around.
Tori – seriously it was refreshing to find her stuff. She was such a nice woman. I was thrilled she remembered me and then wanted to give Baby Singe a toy. How considerate.
Jen – I grabbed her purse because I know I would be sick to my stomach if I lost my beloved belongings. I’ve done the water thing too, usually on the sidelines. I lost my wedding band after a soccer throw-in on a sand field. After 30 minutes of sheer panic, it was found. Nope, I never wear my ring to any sporting adventures after that one.
